The Holestone near The Wayside Inn

The Holestone is an ancient Celtic Stone that stands on a rock outcrop near Doagh in County Antrim. It overlooks the entire Six Mile Valley and is one of only a few holed stones in the Brtish Isles.

It is about 1.5 metres high with a 10cm diameter hole 1 metre from the base. On a nearby hill at Browndod is a court cairn tomb and other evidence of early settlement. It has attracted visitors, seeking eternal love and happiness since the eighteenth century.

Upon reaching the Holestone couples undertake a traditional ceremony where the woman reaches her hand through the circular hole and her partner takes it, thus pledging themselves to love each other forever.
